Detective Ephraim Williams learned long ago not to show any emotion or allow himself to get attached to humans. What was the point? They came and went and he remained. This time wouldn't be any different or so he thought. When his landlady told him that her grandchildren were moving in he didn't expect much, well other than to be left alone. What he didn't expect was to have to fight bloodlust every time he so much as caught the scent of his delectable neighbor's blood or her bombarding him with questions every time she cornered him. If that's not bad enough, a Master from his past has found him once again and is demanding his blood and is willing to do anything to get it, even using the beautiful, irritating, neighbor that makes him feel more than pain for the first time in centuries to get it.

Descubrí a R. L. Mathewson hace un par de años con su saga A neighbor from Hell y me encantó su descaro, su humor, su inteligencia y su habilidad para escribir las escenas más eróticas con sensibilidad y gusto sin rozar el porno. Esta saga me enganchó y se convirtió pronto en una autora a la que recurro cuando no sé muy bien qué leer o cuando necesito algo sexy y romántico pero que también me divierta.

Como no podía ser de otra manera, tenía que probar con su saga paranormal-erótica, Pyte/Sentinel, así que sin pensarlo me lancé a leer Tall, Dark and Lonely y ha sido increíble. Puede que no tenga tantos momentazos de llorar de la risa como la saga A Neighbor from Hell, pero también tiene un humor sarcástico que me encanta. Además es sexy y oscura. 

Madison lleva prácticamente toda su vida cuidando de sus dos medio-hermanos, Jill y Joshua, siendo más que una hermana, una madre para ellos. La madre que nunca han tenido porque la que les dio la vida va y viene según su propio interés y jamás se ha preocupado por ellos. Obligada a cargar nuevamente con una madre egoísta e inmadura, acuden al hogar de su abuela, una mujer fuerte que alquila las habitaciones de su gran hogar, para salir adelante. Allí Madison consigue un trabajo de profesora en el instituto y se hace amiga de un adolescente de dieciséis años que únicamente parece saber meterse en líos, siempre con buena intención, claro. Y, además, está el vecino de al lado, el irresistible y misterioso detective que ocupa la habitación de al lado.

Ephraim lleva siglos escondido a simple vista. Su condición como Pyte, un ser inmortal, más fuerte que cualquier vampiro, y que además puede caminar a la luz del sol, hace de él una criatura temida y ansiada también. Pero desde que se convirtió en lo que es, dos siglos atrás, desde que perdió a toda su familia, no ha conectado con nadie. Actualmente trabaja como detective, vive en un hostal, apartado de todo el mundo, pero rodeado de gente. La llegada de Madison pondrá su mundo patas arriba porque, por primera vez en siglos, se siente vivo, siente que algo podría ser suyo. Pero su vida puede conllevar muchos peligros.

Existe todo un mundo lleno de peligros ahí fuera: vampiros, hombres-lobo, demonios...Para luchar contra ellos están los Centinelas (Sentinels), seres que tienen la mitad del alma de un ángel, más longevos que cualquier humano, que trabajan para mantener el orden y proteger a los humanos. Trabajan sin descanso y tener a un Pyte con ellos puede serles de mucha ayuda. Pero los Pyte son seres codiciados también por la oscuridad debido a su poderosa sangre. Por eso estar cerca de Ephraim puede ser muy peligroso para Madison y su familia.

Pero Ephraim ya no podrá mantenerse alejado de Madison y hará lo que sea necesario para mantenerla a su lado.

His eyes drank in the sight of her body. She was so beautiful from her golden brwon eyes to her butterscotch nipples. She was everything in the world that was perfect and she was his. He growled possessively as his fangs descended. "Come here."

Ephraim me ha vuelto loca de remate, en serio. Es duro, es implacable, cabezota, un poco troglodita, pero es dulce y generoso también. Y se siente solo. Ha estado toda la vida solo y nunca ha tenido a nadie. Sólo un hermano que hace tiempo falleció. Por su condición, en el tiempo en que nació, sufrió durante mucho tiempo gran cantidad de torturas, lo cual le ha convertido en quien es hoy.

Madison es tierna y dulce, el contrapunto perfecto a la personalidad afilada y dura de Ephraim. Pero también es muy fuerte e inteligente. Aunque ha sufrido mucho también y no puede permitirse amar a nadie. Pero Ephraim no se rendirá con ella.
Y la química que hay entre ellos es...irresistible.

Juntos son explosivos.

"Well, then let me deal with it. I'm not asking you to love me. I'm asking you to let me love you. I'm fine if you never say it. I just want you."

La trama...tiene algún altibajo que otro, pero se desenvuelve bien, con mucho ritmo y, lo que es mejor, te prepara para lo que será el transfondo argumental de la saga. Así que, obviamente, cuando terminas con este libro tienes que lanzarte a por el siguiente - cosa que yo ya he hecho - Sí, me ha gustado bastante. Ephraim es irresistible, qué os voy a decir.

En fin...podría tratarse de una saga paranormal erótica más, pero esta saga tiene elementos que la hacen distinta y, sobre todo, el sello de una autora con una inteligencia aguda y una capacidad increíble para crear a las parejas más sexys y explosivas, todo ello con un transfondo argumental.
En fin...otro libro que me ha enganchado de principio a fin y me ha encantado.
Esta autora es maravillosa.
